David Cook & the Infamous Idol Sales Spike
Apr 9th
Once again, American Idol has been treating viewers to appearances by Idols of seasons past. This time we’ve seen finalists Carly Smithson, Michael Johns, and Brooke White (AI7), along with Idol winners Kelly Clarkson (AI1), Ruben Studdard (AI2), and Carrie Underwood (AI4). April Fool’s brought us a half-hearted performance from “reigning Idol” David Cook, whose sales sorely need an Idol boost.
David Cook Sales Predictions…

Don’t let the masculine name of Scott fool you. He’s as fangirly as they come.
As gathered by our beloved Nevada…

So now I will make a prediction. The week that reflects David’s big, triumphant return to AI with a live performance, DCTR will sell 100k. By then a new single will be out and performed on the show.

I firmly believe that in a month, or 6 weeks, when David appears and performs on AI, you will see DCTR move like it did in November…. surpassing this week. The January doldrums will be over, and sales will be picking up. 20+ million Americans, and even more around the world are going to see Mr. Cook perform LIVE (and we all know that few performers on this planet are better live, and on TV, than David), and a chunk of them will not have bought the album. Some will even be new AI fans. I cannot wait to see how DCTR sells that week.

Now I’ve gotten much better at managing my expectations, and this week’s HDD have (so far) been better than I expected…. but I honestly think David and his band hitting it out of the park LIVE on AI will be good for at least 100k in sales that week. 100k for DCTR, and 100k for whatever single he sings.

OK, here’s MY prediction. Based on nothing other than SMGF’s genius MO:
David will appear on AI-8 a little on the early side… just a tad earlier than we might have expected (I’m thinking last Wednesday in February results show, or first Wednesday in March which is 3/4, my predicted platinum date). Why so early, like the end of February? I think David will DEBUT his next single LIVE on the show. I think it will receive download numbers typical of first singles off of “not-yet-released” albums. It will do better than LO. I think it will do as well as “Crush” did (166k?) and could be 200k if David, as I expect, knocks it out of the park, live on AI. I think RCA has the platinum certification in the works and will present David with it even if DCTR sales are still at like 990k. I think that’s kosher. It’s already shipped platinum, and we know after an AI performance it will be platinum for sure.
I think that it could be a #1 or #2 single debut, depending on the competition that week.
I think the ranking will of course hold, but the acutal sales numbers will decrease as fans use the “complete my album” feature. The result will be the next single has a fantastic debut on the Hot 100 chart rankings, great numbers that first week which then decline sharply due to album completion… and a big spike in DCTR numbers. Like 100k to 200k the week David appears carried into the following week.

My point is this… I think we’ve seen that it’s pretty much a guarantee that an AI appearnce will be gigantic for sales. Look at what happened last week. Can you imagine what will happen after David performs live? Perhaps it’s a fairly safe, calculated risk to wait, just so the debut will have a guaranteed 6 figured debue and a high position on the Hot 100. Just throwing it out there. It’s definitely a risk, but we’re talking about delaying the release maybe 2 or 3 weeks.

All in all, with just one “Zenny” single out, DCTR holds onto the top 30, and I think that’s great. Just wait until next month, when DC+EEB peform on AI and two new singles are out there charting. I expect a nice uptick in DCTR sales. I still think 100k after a mind-blowing AI appearance, follwowed by a steady 25k for several weeks. That’s realistic IMO.

I’m still predicting a 100k bump the week David makes his appearance, and that it will carry through the next week to at least 50k. That’s my prediction. This is David & the boys PERFORMING…. a band that always hits it out of the park.
But wait…what is the fangirl saying now you might ask?

So are we happy people?!!! Over 20k at 70.38%! Wooo Hooo!
I have mixed emotions about David & Kelly so close. I love him doing this well 5 months after DCTR’s release, but I don’t love the fact that Kelly is not selling well. A month into the album and now I wonder if it will go platinum at all. This bothers me for two reasons. First, I am a big fan of hers and wish her well, and I think this is an excellent album. Second, I hate to see an AI champ who ruled the charts and the sales come down like this. And this is the 2nd album that has sold much lower than her first two. Basically, my head is saying if this can happen to her, it can happen to David. Perhaps this album of Kelly’s is so pop, it will be one that spawns lots of high charting & selling singles, but not album sales… much like the rest of Top 40. All I know is that people this week heard CBTM and instead of everyone just downloading it, they went for the entire album. This is clear. And it makes lots of money. David is a real money maker during these hard times.
Now, it’s a well known fact that I suck at math but even I know 20000 is less than 100000.
He didn’t even hit it out of the batting cages.
Let the spin begin.
