This is interesting...

The record business Down Under is on the ascent.

Full-year 2009 trade figures issued Wednesday by labels body ARIA show a 4.8% gain in wholesale revenue to $446.1 million Australian ($395 million), powered by a booming digital music sector and solid CD album sales.

Not since the Australian market peaked in 2003 has ARIA reported a full-year period of growth. "These numbers are encouraging and we feel optimistic. But we have to be careful not to be overly optimistic," said Ed St John, ARIA chairman and president/CEO of Warner Music Australasia. "These figures show the green shoots of recovery, but obviously the market is still under pressure all over the world. I don't know that the industry would say it's out of the woods just yet."

For RSF:

Despite all the marital upheaval that's going on in the show this season, the bond between HBO and "Big Love" is stronger than ever. The cable network has just renewed its vows with the Emmy-nominated drama about a man and his three wives, so it will return for a fifth season.

Gee, and in this economy!

THE IT FACTOR: Sony’s This Is It has shattered first-week sales for a music film, as expected. The DVD rocketed to #1 on the home video sales charts, moving around 1.2 million units, according to Home Media magazine, while the Blu-Ray version (which accounted for 21% of total sales) topped that chart as well, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Additionally, This Is It bowed at #5 on the rental chart. (2/5a)

In music news:

R&B star Jill Scott was sued Wednesday by her longtime record label, which is accusing the multi-platinum songstress of skipping out halfway through a six- album contract and potentially owing millions of dollars in damages.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by L.A.-based Hidden Beach Records, claims that the label and its founder, Steve McKeever, helped launch Scott's career and nurtured her into a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter but was unceremoniously dumped in October after a 10-plus year relationship.

This one sounds complicated in my head which never works out well when I write it. So, this former ensemble reality star and now an actress and singer who is probably C- list based on career but B+ based on name recognition is trying to make as much money as possible. I guess everyone is, but it turns out that her husband siphoned off most of their money when they got married. He said it was for investments but what he should have said was it was going to be spent on his various boyfriends and partying with them. Our singer/actress doesn't want to get divorced and have everyone said I told you so. Therefore she just smiles pretty for the cameras and pretends he doesn't exist.
