The fantard excitement for Adam’s debut takes hold.
mahrikka 11/17/2009 at 4:33 pm
I listened to the songs this this a.m. before going to work. Couldn’t get them out of my mind. Made it through two meetings, then came down with a severe case of the gasms and rushed home “sick”. I’m vacillating between extreme excitement jumping up and down to uncontrollable sobbing and sometimes both at the same time. This is beyond AMAZING!!!! When’s the tour? OMG!!!
Although it is a decent response, fantards do love to moralize.
alwaysintrouble 11/20/2009 at 2:47 pm
Exactly!!!! How in the world has this morphed into Adam condoning violence against women???
…
The same way the song morphed into being about rape.
If the artists wouldn’t create the images, the parents wouldn’t have to protect the children. That is part of the problem with society today, the onus all being put on the parents. Well how about some of the responsibility being put on the artist’s shoulders. If they didn’t perpetuate this crap, there would be nothing to protect.
This has been covered but I just had to say WOW. it’s not the artists job to be the moral compass of the rest of the world. They create their art and people are free to appreciate it or not.
I am one of those parents and I know everything you just wrote. However, you mentioned all these shows that are on CABLE, not network TV. And no, if I didn’t follow AI online, I would have no idea Adam would perform something of this nature on a music awards show based on his AI performances.
If you didn’t follow AI online you wouldn’t know who Adam was to begin with and you probably wouldn’t look at him any differently than you would any other performer. Because he’s from AI, it seems he’s been placed in this strange box that he should act like he’s a disney performer so that some parent doesn’t have to explain to their kid why people are DANCING on television.
You think parents should know to put parental controls on the AMAs…seriously? lol. Yeah, we know to nix rap, MTV, etc……but the AMA’s? I could totally see something like this on the MTV awards, but this is ABC on Sunday night. Not one parent is gonna think of putting controls on this show.
Do you think the AMAs is a show that FAMILIES will sit down and watch together? I don’t.
As for what parents will or will not do I have a child and I’ve never had a problem explaining sex to her so if she watches this performance and thinks it about more than just dancing and she asks questions, I’ll gladly answer them for her.
Fantards of other Idols **cough**Cooktards**cough**enjoy the prospects of an Adam failure.
seriously 11/21/2009 at 10:53 pm
I personally cannot stand AL’s voice and his stage personna totally grates. The over the top pimping on Idol and now the media love affair for an artist who personally doesn’t appeal, has turned me from a neutral observer to someone who is trying not to actively root against a singer who deserves every chance for success, even though he is not my personal taste. I actually thought the VFTW album review summarized my feelings about Adam Lambert perfectly (can’t do links). I know it is very small and unbecoming to actively root against someone’s success, but an Adam trainwreck would be endlessly entertaining
.
Will my house get TP’d if I say I agree with you word for word? I’m ready to get out a lawn chair and popcorn if his career tanks. I am biased toward Cook, but with him I just like his “Midwest guy who got lucky” feel, and work ethic. Not to mention his voice which is the best YMMV. I guess I just like a masculine voice. No offense intended.
Susan M. 11/21/2009 at 11:08 pm
Man, if I could seriously go on a site and declare that I want an extremely talented, hard working, kind individual to fail – even if his style was completely outside of what I care for – I would so have to examine my life because I would seriously think I have failed as a human being.
Making Idol sale’s predictions is in a fantard’s blood. As is the propensity to compare/defend—passive aggressively, or not—the numbers of the new Idol threat kid on the block to the numbers for their Idol obsession.
suenigma11/21/2009 at 10:48 pm
Q3 said: I will stick with my prediction — FYE will sell more copies worldwide than David Cook album by 12/1/10. — frame it.
I bet he would produce a multi-genre album and he did. And I am batting about 80% on my Adam predictions right now. So I will stick with it. It is a very, very good album and will sell beyond Idol fans. And Adam will tour and sell more albums.
I predict that you will be proven wrong. But really who knows?
Cook was the #1 selling new artist this year, in terms of album sales, and #13 overall. Sales have also gone down by at least 13% since last year, so Adam has a very large mountain to climb. I wish him well, but I am just not convinced that this album warrants such optimism. Even if he does end up with a couple of monster hits, a la Katy Perry or Lady Gaga, that didn’t really translate into album sales for them did it? Didn’t Gaga only just recently make platinum? I know it took a year anyways.
And I love Cook, but why isn’t he performing on the AMAs?
If he couldn’t land a performance slot on the actual show last year at the prime of his album promo I sure as heck wouldn’t expect him to get one now when he doesn’t have a single to promote.
Fangirls will make stuff up lie to prove their point.
leome 11/21/2009 at 10:40 pm
I for one can tell you that I had never heard of Cook, Daughtry or any other idol before I came here to read about Adam. I had never watched AI, and won´t watch it in the future. Adam was the only incentive to watch the show.
We did not have Adam in the trailers but we had the complete song in the film. (I am in Europe)
I am in Europe and I’ve heard of Daughtry and Cook but I have never heard of Adam. (And of course I have heard of Kelly, and Jordin and even Archie) And yes, the song is in the movie, they weren’t going to cut it. What I meant it that if they wanted to promote Adam outside of US, why not start by using his song? But they didn’t.
Point 1:
Leome, the one claiming that she never heard of Adam Lambert, is posting on an AI fansite.
Point 2:
If one has heard of little d, Cook, Kelly, Jordin, and Archie, they are pretty much a regular follower of American Idol. To claim that they “never heard of Adam Lambert…right!
Fantards always try to explain why their Idol’s single tanked has not yet skyrocketed to the top of the charts and with radio spins.
Tess 11/21/2009 at 8:52 pm
I think everything that is being bantered about the single is based on individual semantics. def: •in the study of language, semantics is concerned with the meaning of words, expressions and sentences, often in relation to reference and truth. …
Yes FYE was released as a single, yes a video was made, yes it hasn’t done well on radio all truisms. Now the semantics come into play. Was it released by mistake, was it released on a trial basis to get some airplay prior to the AMAs and to get it playing “onDemand” where it could be listened to, is it out in radio land with hopes that if it does well on the AMAs, radio will begin spinning it without RCA having to go through the process of convincing stations to spin it…its there just hovering.
Has RCA also decided to release another single that is a bit more user friendly and can move easily between top 40 and HAC? Has it gone to formal ads yet…or is it also hovering to see how the AMAs and the album does. And is all of this done just to increase eventual sales for an album that RCA thinks is really good.
And TfM is a horse of a totally different color and it’s history is too long and boring to repeat for the gazillion and 61st time.
I don’t have any definitive answers….does someone else. It seems to me that it is all speculation, by most everyone, at this point. Or am I being to pedantic, again?
koshka 11/21/2009 at 6:45 pm
Surely that’s why some huge arena selling concert acts have taken to giving some of their new music away free: they know where the money lies. It makes it very hard for a new act.
It makes me hopeful for Cook in one way, because his concert sales and albums have started off well: although it does worry me that he hasn’t broadened his fanbase enough. Still time (and the second album release will tell).
Cook always strikes me as someone who owns the stage when he performs. I’ve never seen him live, still I can see it in YT clips. Good performers have a presence… he has it. I didn’t much care for his first album, but I’m looking forward to hearing his next now that he has had some time (and distance) from the AI machine.
They also are adept at baiting repeatedly making their point
koshka 11/21/2009 at 7:16 pm
As for Cook, I’m glad that he is gradually establishing himself as a great live act and that news of this seems to be, very slowly, seeping into live reviews of his concerts.
Cook is really doing things his way (so it seems), I really respect that.
Fantards search for a variety of metrics to prove their Idol is the most successful of all Idols.
Austintoo 11/21/2009 at 6:08 pm
jan 11/21/2009 at 6:00 pm
well, Adamofficial.com currently ranks above MJ’s in terms of traffic rank in the US right now per Alexa.com.
Where do you get this? I just checked alexa
I get the following MJs ranks higher than DCO which ranks higher than ALO. [Adam Lambert Official fan site] MJs:
Traffic Rank: 47,252
Traffic Rank US: 12,434
The ranking for adamofficial.com is 10,998 for the US. It is 50,028 for worldwide.
Another metric of success…number of registered members on an Idol fansite.
Hazehel 11/21/2009 at 6:12 pm
How many registered fans are there in each of the sites?
Answering my own question, if I haven’t messed up on the calculations –
AO – 35353 (1251 fans online) – 3.5% of fans are online
DCO – 24279 (4635 fans online) – 19% of fans are online
If AO really that unpopular compared to DCO? The DCO number still looks odd to me though, I don’t see why such a high percentage of fans should be online at any one time there. At the moment the numbers simply don’t make sense, whether the sites count only registered fans or not.
Oh, did I mention passive aggressive?
Fantards often use quotes from their Idol’s marketing/PR team
dsp 11/21/2009 at 6:16 pm AO has the highest fan engagement/participation of ANY Sony Music artist website (even more than Michael Jackson’s – congratulations!),
This is a quote that RCA management has on AO site today regarding the revamp scheduled for tomorrow
ksgirlfordc 11/21/2009 at 6:23 pm
So now we’re going to debate how many people are on the official fan sites? Jeeeezzz. This constant comparison is getting old.
Also — the #2 keyword used to get to AmericanIdol.com is “Adam Lambert” after “American Idol”.
All hard copy sales of an album (Big box outlets, Amazon, official websites, etc.) these numbers are reported to SoundScan and are counted [and you better bet your boots that RCA is making sure every last CD is counted....I would even bet CDs that are given away as prizes (like on TV talk shows) and as radio gifts are counted...even if it is the record company buying from itself to give the CD away [someone in the know please respond].
To count as a Billboard or RIAA sale unit, the item must be sold for at least 50% of the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price. Promotional sales do not count.
“Mail” distributed hard copy albums, like from a fan site or Amazon or Barnes and Nobel account for about 15% (usually) of all album sales.
The percentage of delivered CD’s is now around 20% of sales — Amazon CD deliveries average around 10% of total music sales for Q4 2009.
Amazon is 5% of sales.
For the first half of 2009 Amazon was 12% of total music sales — 14% of CD sales, and 9% of digital sales. Amazon’s market share is increasing, while the total music business is shrinking.
Finally, music sales revenue in the US are currently DOWN 21% vs. last year. It is the economy and illegal downloads and free music, but it is down substantially. And sales do not look like with will stop dropping. Musical artists who depend on record sales are hurting, artist with strong concert sales are doing fine.
More metrics measuring success…the number of views of an Idol’s official website that come from other countries.
undercooked11/21/2009 at 6:10 pm
From that Alexa site that was linked for AO. See below.
(I wonder how many Yemen based websites exist? Because right now they get the crown if I am understanding these numbers correctly)

15,936 Singapore
17,445 Indonesia
22,770 Canada
24,682 Philippines

Thursday, November 19, 2009 – 15:58 Scott: PeachMango, it’s even worse this year for AI8. I think AL was more of a “frontrunner” with a “surprise” loss than Archie was, and Kris was never as strong a contestant as David was. We all assume Kris’s album will do ok but nowhere near David’s 280k, and AL is a crapshoot. Lots of hype, but right now, his two singles’ sales and a seemingly bungled launch of them have generated huge amounts of angst and debate on the other blog(s). Plus, neither versions of No Boundaries charted. Last year David had a HUGE hit in TOML going into LO, and LO was charting nicely going into DCTR. It all seems so well planned now. This year, no coronation song carried Kris thru the summer, and the signs are for OK but not stellar debuts numbers wise. And radio is coming along for Kris’ single, but no better than LO did so their fans don’t have a huge success like TOML to hold onto & track with glee. AMAs will surely give AL a nice boost. At least last year we had that fantastic SNL performance to leave a great flavor in our mouth the entire month of Davember. I say all this, as we look back at the last year, to see how fortunate David and his fans have been.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift’s 53 week old Fearless pulled in 91,380 (HDD final today). That’s a real WTF situation lol! Some things just cannot be explained.
Bon Jovi’s new album debuted at 165,871, but sometimes artists who’ve been around for decades don’t do much better. Does anyone know if their album debuted everywhere, or was it limited this week? I expected at least 200k from them.
Switchfoot debuted at 33,286. David is now a much bigger star than the band he covered. That’s what AI does for a mega-talent!
You’d think a mega-talent’s debut album wouldn’t have fallen off the SS200 after 44 weeks.
Friday, November 20, 2009 – 10:09 234DEB: EW.com is asking our opinion who should win Best New Artist.
EW.com is asking us who should win Grammy for Best New artist so go on over and give David your vote. Just search EW.com when comes up go to MUSIC MIX BLOG and under Lady Gaga should not win Best New Artist they ask you to comment on who you think should win it. I do agree Lady Gaga should not win the award they have in my opinion only one good song where all of Davids are amazing. SO GO AND GIVE YOUR COMMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!
Friday, November 20, 2009 – 13:14 follia: I posted. Scroll down the page to find the “comments section”. Clearly this thread is gathering people to the site. There are a bunch of David Cook comments coming in now. We need to keep them coming.
Friday, November 20, 2009 – 13:30 janlin: I commented also
Friday, November 20, 2009 – 13:45 eilonwy: Spread out the comments over time so it doesn’t look like a staged fan pile-on!
Skimming what’s been posted so far… the comments reflect SO WELL on DC fandom! Calm, fact-based, focused on issues that are important to the award and the EW audience, and when other bands are mentioned, associating Cook with some important and hip acts… what y’all are doing is a thing of beauty and refutes the silly and demeaning myths about who Cook fans are. Two thumbs up, and I may have to go look for some more thumbs.
But it was and IS a staged fan pile-on.

Dumb blond, there was no voting involved.
Saturday, November 21, 2009 – 21:17 Catarina: You have probably noticed that commenters are complaining that a “fan site” for David Cook has taken over the EW comment section. Maybe we should cool it.
Saturday, November 21, 2009 – 21:45 blackkathy: got my husband to comment…much more nonchantly than I ever would! But he really does like him.
Nonchantly, huh? Wordnerds of a feather apparently do flock together…
Saturday, November 21, 2009 – 21:49 Luvncookie: No way, this is a chance to tell them what we think! They asked…so lets tell them!!!! Maybe if we reply to the earlier comments instead of all the later comments?

I agree w/David Cook. His album was released within the eligible time frame, and went platinum in less than 3 mos. Also has 2 platinum singles, and has been selling an ave. of 90% on 150+ show tour as headliner since Feb. Pretty impressive.

David Cook-platinum artist with a successful 100 plus show tour.
harley quinn Tue 11/17/09 5:31 PM
David Cook had the highest sales for an eligible debut artist, so he should be in the running. I’d say Airborne Toxic Event, but they really haven’t broken out in a big way. Maybe Grizzly Bear, 3OH!3?
EW fan Tue 11/17/09 5:32 PM
David Cook for sure. He is the best selling new artist this chart year according to Billboard. He should get the nod.
BR Tue 11/17/09 5:35 PM
David Cook. Definitely!
His album is the best-selling album by a new artist this year by a significant margin (Lady Gaga is #2).
My bet is on a Best New Artist nod and Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance nomination for LIght On.
Good luck!

Jem Tue 11/17/09 7:13 PM
I’m surprised that David Cook doesn’t get much mention. Incredible voice, great songwriter and one of the best live performers in his genre. Plus his album sold more than any other eligible new artists and his tour is still doing extremely well, even after almost a year. Way too underrated IMO.
Ayla Tue 11/17/09 7:22 PM
David Cook should get the Best New Artist Grammy. His album sold platinum this year as did 2 of his singles. He’s had a solid presence on HAC and AC radio with a string of Top 10 hits there. And he’s had a successful tour that has been going on for most of this year.

Hello….David Cook. His first album went 1.3 million and was certified platinum in three months. He has three hit singles off his record, two of which are certified platinum. He has headlined a successful tour since Feb 13. He puts on a great live show and his songs actually sound better live at his shows. He wrote 10 of 12 songs off his record and he plays a mean guitar.

After seeing David Cook in concert, I have decided he is my favorite new break out musician. It doesn’t matter to me where he came from, his ability to connect with the audience on an emotional level is amazing. After reading about the statistics, I would think something would be very wrong if he didn’t get nominated.

David Cook without a doubt the man has a a phenomal year and is still going strong. With a platinum CD, great selling tour, 3 top ten songs on the HAC and 2 platinum songs. The man is the best new artist in my book.
R. Fri 11/20/09 12:22 PM
David Cook should get nominated and win.

David Cook should be nominated. I agree, pretty impressive.
follia Fri 11/20/09 1:09 PM
David Cook definitely deserves the award. His platinum album topped all others for sales by a new artist. It was number 13 for the year in total sales of all albums. His tour has sold extremely well for close to 150 concerts since its start in Feb. of 09, so well, in fact it was extended by several months. His 3 singles off the album have all gone recurrent. He has represented himself and the industry with class. He has established himself as committed to giving back to his fans and to charity. His performance of his song “Permanent” on his return to Idol for the 2009 finale was a standout. I could go on….

David Cook
Platinum album in 3 mos time
2 Platinum Singles
Been on tour since February–still going strong with almost sold out shows!
Cimorene Fri 11/20/09 1:57 PM
I’d definitely include David Cook. He’s performed at over 140 concerts this year alone with a ridiculously high sell-out rate, and his album has sold at least 1.2 million copies (the most a new artist has sold this year). Additionally, while I know American Idol gets knocked for a lot of reasons — some deservedly — what I find interesting is that it *does* manage to find talent that can sing well — or more than well — without Autotune. Also, All but 3 songs on Cook’s album were songs he wrote himself or co-wrote with other artists (and the credits were not vanity credits either; he’d been writing and performing songs on the indie scene for years before Idol).
All in all, definitely reasons for a nomination.
Coco Fri 11/20/09 2:08 PM
David Cook’s amazing vocals are the best I’ve heard live in a very long time. I just saw him perform and was blown away by his vocal range. The crowd rushed the stage and Cook held that audience in the palm of his hands for the entire set. If Best New Artist is based on voice and performance skills, he should be right up there.

David Cook should definitely be nominated. Platinum album, 2 platinum singles, and an incredibly successful headliner tour. SNL, GMA, Leno, Ellen. He went to Iraq and Kuwait to entertain our troops and performed with Archie in Manila. His voice is beautiful and he puts on an amazing rock show. His a capella and acoustic skills are just as impressive as his full band performances. Singer, song-writer, guitar player, entertaining front man, humanitarian…yes, David Cook should be nominated and win.
Elena Fri 11/20/09 9:25 PM
David Cook without a doubt.

kelly Fri 11/20/09 11:04 PM
I agree with previous post – David has had an amazing year all around – he is a talent – people need to forget any prejudice they may have against American Idol and just listen to the voice and the music. His album was released within the eligible time frame, and went platinum in less than 3 mos. Also has 2 platinum singles, and has been selling an ave. of 90% on 150+ show tour as headliner since Feb. Pretty impressive.
Alexis Sat 11/21/09 9:09 PM
David Cook or The Dead Weather. David has had a bunch of radio hits, a platinum record, and a successful year long tour, and is incredible live. The Dead Weather seems less known, but I love them!
Clodia Sat 11/21/09 9:20 PM
David Cook is the best new artist: is album sold platinum in less than 3 months, he has 2 planinum singles and a series of concerts that sold very well.
Kathee Sat 11/21/09 9:28 PM
Definitely David Cook – His album went platinum and he is now finishing up a successful 9month,150 concert tour. The band rocks and Davids voice is sublime.
John Black Sat 11/21/09 9:39 PM
I saw David Cook in concert recently. Great show, full of energy and mostly original songs (co- )written by Cook. I checked him out; his debut album went platinum this year and he release 2 singles to Billboard – hit top 10. Seems like a good choice.
Hetty Sat 11/21/09 10:05 PM
He is the real deal – good all around.
Barb Sat 11/21/09 10:04 PM
David Cook – who was making unbelievable, incredible music before AI, and will be for years to come. (While Lady Gaga will be a bad joke 10 years from now.) Check out any David Cook performance of “Anodyne” on YouTube. Check out a performance of “’til I’m Blue” and you’ll see he’s not your tween fave pop artist. (See dub dot youtube dot com/watch?v=w05QBDf5iu8) May I also suggest Mwk for best new artist?

The fantard excitement for Adam’s debut takes hold.
Although it is a decent response, fantards do love to moralize.
…
The same way the song morphed into being about rape.

Fantards of other Idols **cough**Cooktards**cough**enjoy the prospects of an Adam failure.

Making Idol sale’s predictions is in a fantard’s blood. As is the propensity to compare/defend—passive aggressively, or not—the numbers of the new
Idol threatkid on the block to the numbers for their Idol obsession.I predict that you will be proven wrong.
Did I mention passive aggressive?
If he couldn’t land a performance slot on the actual show last year at the prime of his album promo I sure as heck wouldn’t expect him to get one now when he doesn’t have a single to promote.

Fangirls will
make stuff uplie to prove their point.I am in Europe and I’ve heard of Daughtry and Cook but I have never heard of Adam.

Fantards always try to explain why their Idol’s single
tankedhas not yet skyrocketed to the top of the charts and with radio spins.Yes FYE was released as a single, yes a video was made, yes it hasn’t done well on radio all truisms.
Fantards love to hijack threads.

Fantards search for a variety of metrics to prove their Idol is the most successful of all Idols.
Where do you get this? I just checked alexa
Another metric of success…number of registered members on an Idol fansite.
This is a quote that RCA management has on AO site today regarding the revamp scheduled for tomorrow

Every now and again, a fantard gets it right.
There is always the uberexpert fantard around to set the record straight.
I get the following MJs ranks higher than DCO which ranks higher than ALO.
MJs:
Traffic Rank: 47,252
Traffic Rank US: 12,434
DCO:
Traffic Rank: 152,733
Traffic Rank US: 44,531
ALO:
Traffic Rank: 2,187,627
Traffic Rank US: 381,223
Adam’s official site is AdamOfficial.com — looks like you checked AdamLambertOfficial –
The Alexa rank for AdamOfficial is – past 90 days is: #10,998 US, #50,028 Worldwide
Link: http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/Adamofficial.com
The above ranks are correct for MJs and DCO.

From DCO’s head cheerleader:
Thursday, November 19, 2009 – 15:58 Scott:
PeachMango, it’s even worse this year for AI8.
Talk about pathetic…

Skimming what’s been posted so far… the comments reflect SO WELL on DC fandom! Calm, fact-based, focused on issues that are important to the award and the EW audience, and when other bands are mentioned, associating Cook with some important and hip acts… what y’all are doing is a thing of beauty and refutes the silly and demeaning myths about who Cook fans are. Two thumbs up, and I may have to go look for some more thumbs.
