Katharine McPhee Talks New Album, New Movie, And New Look
CNS: On this album, you got to write with artists Paula Cole, Ingrid Michaelson, Rachael Yamagata. How did you hook up with them and what was that experience like?
KM: Ingrid Michaelson I met at Hotel Cafe through a friend and I wasn’t really familiar with her as an artist. She was like, “You might know my song” and was really humble about it. She sang me that song [Katharine starts singing "The Way I Am"] and I was like I totally know that song. So I quickly went home and downloaded all her stuff and became a huge fan of hers. We stayed friends and connected and we started writing songs whenever I’d be in New York or she’d be in town. She’d come over with her little ukelele and we were writing songs together before I’d even started work on this album….

Thanks Lisa, the interviews were great. It’s fascinating to get an inside look behind the scenes in the UK…so far, the confidentiality clause in the Idols’ contracts here in the U.S. have kept a pretty tight lid on it.

In music news:
MTV Urge … Yahoo Music Unlimited … Virgin Digital … Since 2003 — when iTunes launched in the United States — all of these digital music services have come and gone, without challenging Apple’s market dominance, despite the backing of resource-rich parent companies.
Add in all the startups that have crashed and burned in the same time period and it starts to look as if no service could ever rival iTunes’ traction with customers and critics.
Until now.
The Sweden-based startup Spotify, launched for public access in October 2008, has momentum like no other digital music service of the last six years. It offers on-demand music streaming, in both free and premium services, and now claims to have more than 6 million users in Sweden, Norway, Finland, the United Kingdom, France and Spain. At one point it reported signing up new members at a rate of 50,000 per day, although that figure has fallen since September, when the service restricted its free version to invited guests in the United Kingdom.

Although I’m a notoriously bad fan, I am a fan of this Simon:
Carly Simon rarely performs concerts, due to a toxic combination of stage fright and fear of flying.
Fans who really want to hear the singer/songwriter dust off “You’re So Vain” or “Anticipation” might be advised to go under the knife.
For Simon’s boyfriend is a laparoscopic surgeon in Plymouth, Mass., and she occasionally accompanies him to the operating room where she soothes nervous patients by singing to them. Sporting scrubs and surgical mask, she even takes requests.
“One of them asked for ‘Haven’t Got Time for the Pain,’” Simon said in a recent interview, referencing a 1974 hit.

For Hez:
GLEE POWER: Lots of industry interest in tomorrow’s release of the first volume of Columbia’s Glee soundtrack album, one of two they will put out before the end of the year. Songs on the disc have been downloaded more than 2 million times, with the cast version of “Don’t Stop Believin’” alone selling more than 500k. Seven of the tracks have been represented on the iTunes Top 200. Will those sales cannibalize or help promote sales of the full album? That’s what everyone will want to see. (11/2p)

From DCO:
Friday, October 30, 2009 – 00:23 DonnaAC:
Speaking of Carrie..a couple of people got her CD early and in the liner notes in the paragraph where she thanks her friends, she thanks “Cookie”. Some Carrie fans don’t know of any other Cookie she knows and are assuming Cookie=David. Aww.
Friday, October 30, 2009 – 00:52 PeachMango:
As I recall, David thanked a “Carrie” in his liner notes to DCTR. If so, double aww.
Friday, October 30, 2009 – 08:07 widz:
Awwwww. Please let Cookwood come true.
*psst Carrie pls break it off with Mike and make beautiful musical babies with David psst*
Heh. *textual smiley*
Friday, October 30, 2009 – 08:13 janlin:
Yea, they would make beautiful babies together. I think they would make a cute couple…but I think David needs someone without a demanding career–someone who will be there for him whether he is away or home. Enough said…I don’t want to go planning his love life!!! I just want him to be happy, that is all.
Friday, October 30, 2009 – 09:19 Sasha:
Cookie? She calls him Cookie.
Awww! and also, Bwah! Carrie actually has a snarky / dry wit sense of humour so I think this is hilarious and also adorkable. Now I’m imaging her calling him on the phone saying, “Hi Cookie”. Hee. I will henceforth associate Cookie with CookWood.
Carrie + Cookie = C2 = CookWood FTW!
I wonder if he’ll go to Wal-Mart at midnight in his pjs to pick up her new album. From the tracks she’s released on iTunes, it is sounding incredible. She’s really come a long way, artistically and emotively, since her first album.
We snark because we love, y’all.
Friday, October 30, 2009 – 09:29 DonnaAC:
I just saw the liner notes myself and its interesting. While she thanks a slew of people career related, family, album related, her band, etc. the “friends” section isnt that big, like 7 names. Makes me think she’s very picky about her true friends that have nothing to do with her career. Her exact words after she says the names are “you are all so wonderful and I’m truly blessed!”. <3 Very sweet. Sadly after seeing what she wrote about her boyfriend I’ve decided I need to stop dreaming about pretty CookWood babies…
And yep I figured she was the “Carrie” he thanked back then. After seeing her blog she wrote the night before DCTR came out I had a feeling they were pretty close. Of course this was before we knew she actually went out in her PJ’s to buy the CD ha!
Friday, October 30, 2009 – 09:31 jasmine:
I’m picturing him downloading it from i-tunes at midnite in his undies…
Friday, October 30, 2009 – 09:31 Zarita:
*cough* Well I’m guessing he’s not gonna walk into Walmart naked, so let’s hope he owns a pair. And if he does, I want pictures, dammit. I bet they have a Scottie dog pattern. Or maybe different pictures of Fair food.
Friday, October 30, 2009 – 10:44 Sasha:
DonnaAC thanks for the liner notes info. So Carrie chose the jock over the word nerd. Aww… and his favorite Carrie song is “I Know You Won’t”. Aw… sadness.** I don’t ‘ship then that way. I just want them to take over the music world because that will help in overall Cook Domination.
**Disclaimer: I am not suggesting that there was any choosing to be had. I love that they are friends and I love that they sing together professionally.
Sunday, November 1, 2009 – 20:43 DonnaAC:
Sorry I’m post-hoing!
USA Today’s Brian Mansfield interviewed Carrie…
http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2009-11-02-carrieinside02_ST_N.htm
David Cook, who won American Idol three seasons after she did, joins her for Van Halen’s Why Can’t This Be Love. “We sound really good together, point blank,” she says. He also lived briefly in Tulsa, and she likes that. “Out of all the people that have been on Idol, he’s my best friend.”
Oh god my heart!
Sunday, November 1, 2009 – 20:54 JuneBelle:
Donna: That kind of comment from Carrie towards Dave in the USA Today goes miles in advancing the public perception of Dave, I think. If Carrie, superstar in country music circles and widely known everywhere, gives props to Dave as both a performer and great guy enough to be her close friend, many of her fans and USA readers alike will remember those sentiments.
Thank you for bringing that here to us.
Sunday, November 1, 2009 – 21:01 QueenJ:
Great point JuneBelle, I’m pretty sure that interview will get printed in USA Today, which I believe is the second highest circulated newspaper in the country (I looked it up, 1.9 mil per day). So something like that is great exposure for sure.
Sunday, November 1, 2009 – 21:10 LostMySnark:
Thanks for the link to the Carrie interview. This does not help with my in poor taste shipping tendencies. And I just saw that E News segment today with Stars as children in their Halloween costumes. And they showed Carrie and David back to back. Too adorable.
Anyway I know her real BF is good looking since they interviewed him during the same E News broadcast. Really handsome and fit. Although he has a massive skull. Just sayin….
Sunday, November 1, 2009 – 21:25 Megg:
David as a networker, a connecting force with, to, between people. I really find this interesting. He seems to bring people together. His gifts are many and complex, and he continues to grow into them.
Sunday, November 1, 2009 – 21:52 Sasha:
“she had a milkshake. With Oreo bits. And, she whispers, “It was good.”
Hm, so Carrie’s a fan of oreos, too. How cute would a Double Stuffed (League) Oreos commercial be with David and Carrie? Idols versus the Manning Brothers? Heh. SMGF, give me a call. I have loads of ideas.
CookWood FTW.
Idiots.

This pales in comparison to Kac’s recaps, but for those who might have missed the show last night:
Lots of tears on this leg of “The Amazing Race.” And a lot of hugs, for that matter.
Adversity is the name of the game on “The Amazing Race” and producers throw all manner of obstacles at our racers to overcome, but none of these are as destructive as the contestants second-guessing themselves and, well, misreading the clues.
This week found the teams jetting off to the Netherlands, where they had to engage in a series of eccentric behaviors, from cross-dressing and stripping down to their underwear to counting bells and eating raw herring. Fortunately, no one attempted to force anyone down a slide for a million dollars this week, making it a relatively calm leg without any tantrums or shoving.
