So You Think You Can Dance: Recap/Review for the Top Ten
Woo hoo, finally we are at Top Ten night, now I can really get into everything. Hopefully this will be good.
Honestly, sometimes as I write these things, I feel, what an odd thing, a recap/review of a dancing show. Everything is so visual, why does one need to recap? All I do is spew forth my feelings on the show, my opinions, my biases. Does anyone care what I think? Should they? Why?
I am so conflicted. Do we as fans of the show and dance need affirmation for our own opinions? Hey, I thought that sucked, so did she, party on.
Well regardless of all that I am going to bitch away and express my oh so useful opinion.
Anyway, we have the Top Ten dancers. And the guest judge is Debbie Allen. Cat babbles on about Nigel losing control over the outcome. Oh yes, I totally believe that as of this day, Nigel’s grubby little paws will be out of the mix and he will not manipulate a thing. Random pairings and dance choices my ass.
The girls do a Bollywood routine. It was fun, it has put me in the mood for Indian dance and song. Comments like spicy tandoori, Bollywow, come from the judges tonight. I care not for judges! I only care for dancing!
And Indian culture…
Tallest girl, Kayla is paired with shortest guy, Evan for a Viennese Waltz. Evan gets heels and Kayla wears flats. I liked it, hey, it was a waltz. It looked elegant and more like a proper Waltz than a contemporary Waltz influenced routine.
The judges were reasonably supportive. Mary was very critical of Evan’s technique. But they all agreed that Evan was strong and good with the lifts. Kayla can do no wrong. All the judges seemed to be surprised that Evan did as well as he did. Weird. Debbie Allen gushed completely, she is a positive person.
Janette and Ade are partnered tonight. Lordy, I wish Ade would take that pick thing out of his hair, it looks stupid. And they do my fave (sarcasm), Hip Hop. And by Napoleon and Tabitha, I think I will nickname them the Horrible Hip Hop Choreographers, from this night on. For once I didn’t totally hate the routine (I will still call them that, though). Really, how do I describe this? Both dancers did good. Watch some YouTubes, I think Hezzer will post some tomorrow. Right now I will post something else, because that is what is interesting me at this moment in time.
But the judges babbled and liked it and I am exceedingly weary of them.
Except for Debbie Allen. I like her, she can stay, does she have any brothers or sisters? Can they replace Nigel and Mary?
Because I am not interested in Hip Hop, I will play this YouTube instead, because I am fascinated by space travel, and the anniversary is coming up in a few days…
Jeanine and Jason partner together for a Travis contemporary dance thingy. Nicely done, this is the way to use a prop (they had this necklace they kept passing back and forth). Incredibly nicely done. The only annoying thing was the audience squealing and screaming DURING THE FUCKING PIECE!!!!! Morons.
Well it was a good performance, I think Jason is becoming a favourite. Jeanine too. I do believe that they were both held back by not so great partners. Sorry Phillip, sorry Caitlin (well not really). This was a good couple and a wonderful routine. WATCH IT ON FUCKING YOUTUBE!!!! Kudos to Travis.
And Mary was speechless. Unfortunately not for long.
Randi and Kupono get to do a Paso Doble. Oh my, I just do not see this. Wish I hadn’t seen it, it felt like it was never going to end. Can I say, I didn’t like it? Music, blech, and the dancing looked off, and it was not the choreography this time. I don’t know why Randi needed a brown wig.
Nigel wasn’t crazy about it. He wasn’t feeling it either. Mary thought it didn’t really work either. Debbie followed suit.
Will they get sympathy votes? Who knows, who cares.
Brandon and Melissa did a Broadway number by Tyce. The Age of Aquarius was the song. Yes they can dance, but I was kind of not very interested. Which is too bad, because I like Brandon.
The solos can annoy me, most of the dancers suck, and I mean suck with choreography. There are often a lot jumps and rolling about on the ground. I am not often impressed. It often looks as though the dancer is trying to throw in every trick they can, they are frantic and busy and have no flow or theme. The solo has to be really good to impress me, I rarely remember them as soon as they are done. That said…
Tonight’s solos: Brandon, yes he can move, and he looks lovely, but I have already forgotten what he did; Randi, floor rolling, check, boring, check, next…; Kupono, no tricks, he tried to do a continuous work and he made his own costume, he tried, it wasn’t as bad as I feared it would be; Melissa, yes eventually makes it down to the floor, good tricks, but not memorable; Evan, cute routine, he can move, I liked this one, it was old style-ish and well thought out; Kayla, frantic, floor writhing, yup, next; Ade, was also frantic, but he scored points with being shirtless, that’s really all I remember, dang, his solo last week was quite good, too bad; Jeanine, not bad; Jason, oooo I liked that one, nicely choreographed, (liking Jason, therefore he is doomed, sigh); and finally Janette with a ballroom solo, it is good for what it is, these solos can be limited.
The guys do an African Dance. It looked difficult. I thought in the end that it was good. A lot of comments were made about Evan and his awkwardness, he was singled out (none were really negative, but… ). Was it because he was pasty white? He seemed as good as the others to me. One thing though, Evan and shirtless? Not a good mix at all.
Well pasty white guys can do African Dance, I watched this band in concert, the lead singer is as pasty as they come, but he kept up nicely with the other dancers in his band and wasn’t embarrassing to watch, this is a little fragment from one of his concerts…
Juluka was great in concert. Johnny Clegg was born and raised in South Africa, so he is African.
OK, until next time kimkac says goodnight.

Oh yes, I wish Nigel would stop being such an ass and let his annoyance about the Russian Folk dance go, he is starting to be embarrassing. Starting? I guess he is always kind of a fool, never mind, carry on being a foolish ass, Nigel.

Great recap, kac, thanks. Another fascinating collection of YouTubes, as well, although if I never hear the song “Hair” again, it would make me very happy.
I voted last night, but first I came here to see if you had any favorites so I could vote accordingly; I already knew who the bad ducks wanted me to vote for.
