Music industry news, once removed:
On Tuesday an independent magazine backed by private equity owners succumbed to the punishing ad market and announced it would cease publication immediately. It was, as things go in publishing these days, a fairly routine story.
Routine except the magazine had an 800,000 circulation, was founded by the music impresario Quincy Jones and had an alluring name that came to be synonymous with hip-hop and R&B: Vibe.

More sales news:
As soon as the news of Michael Jackson’s death began to spread last Thursday afternoon, radio programmers around the country cued up his songs, and fans rushed to retail and online outlets to buy his music in quantities that broke records on Billboard’s sales charts.
The three best-selling albums in the United States last week were all by Mr. Jackson: “Number Ones” sold 108,000 copies; “The Essential Michael Jackson” sold 102,000; and “Thriller” sold 101,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In total, 422,000 copies of Mr. Jackson’s albums were sold in the week that ended on Sunday —more than 40 times the previous week’s figure — as fans snapped up everything in sight.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the music spectrum…
This just in: American Idol’s season 6 runner-up, Blake Lewis, will drop his sophomore set, Heartbreak on Vinyl, on October 6th via Tommy Boy Entertainment. Also breaking: My voice, because despite my best efforts to suppress it, I let out a schoolgirl-like squeal when said record-release news landed in my inbox.

This has nothing at all to do with music, kind of like Blake:
Don’t look down. Or do, since that’s the idea. But brace for vertigo. In the city of big shoulders, this is like standing on an eyelash.
It’s a glass ledge, 1 1/2 inches thick and poking out about four feet from the 103rd floor of the Sears Tower. There is no frame under the floor, only air — 1,353 feet of it, straight down to the miniature taxis on Wacker Drive.
Washington Post
The thought alone makes me shudder. Again, kind of like Blake.

WHY? Seriously, why?

Evil, caustic bitch that I am, if MJ had to die, why couldn’t he have died the week before the smug slug poser’s album release. I am hoping MJ’s sales are strong for at least a couple more weeks.

So bLame named his new album “Heartbreak?” Just like his post-Idol career, I suspect.
