Since I spent way too many years in graduate school immersed in media studies, presidential politics, and history, I can’t resist sharing this link.
The New York Times has a nice internet feature accessing their Presidential endorsements through the years – back to their 1860 endorsement of Abraham Lincoln. It is interesting to see the discussion of the historic issues in real time.
Fun fact for history geeks – The Times endorsed Wendell Willkie over FDR in 1940.

David Cook Crafts Heaviest “American Idol” Album Yet
The reality-TV champ taps Green Day producer for disc of rock anthems
“I’m not trying to surprise people now: I’m putting out a rock record. I just want the songs to kick you in the teeth or make you want to cry — or do something drastic, like jump off a building. I want somebody to be exhausted when they’re done listening.”
…
“A lot of it was done via e-mail and telephone calls,” says the genial Cook. “I was face to face with Rob maybe five times before I got off the tour, and I had to bare my soul to this guy. But you can’t expect anybody else to invest themselves emotionally in a record if you can’t do it yourself. It was really scary — the best analogy I can come up with is that it was like taking off your clothes in church.“

The economy? Over saturation? Idol burnout?
American Idols’ show at Ramona Bowl canceled
The “American Idols” show at the Ramona Bowl tonight has been canceled, officials said.
Al Cordova, president of the Ramona Bowl Music Association, said lagging ticket sales are the reason for the show’s cancellation.
“Sales were down — they didn’t want to come out for a handful of people,” he said.
…
Former “American Idol” contestants Justin Guarini, Gina Glocksen, Mikalah Gordon, Rickey Smith and Jon Peter Lewis were scheduled to perform.

Time once again to mock the arrogant poser tool known as little d™:
At 100 weeks, Kelly’s “Breakaway” had sold 5,555,132
At 100 weeks, Carrie’s “Some Hearts” had sold 5,960,412
At 100 weeks, little d™’s “daughtry” has sold 4,256,719
The pathetic 0-for-4 loser has sold 1,298,413 fewer copies than Kelly and 1,703,693 fewer than Carrie.
As for equivalent weeks:
10-24-06 Kelly’s “Breakaway” sold 5,187
10-23-07 Carrie’s “Some Hearts” sold 9,772
10-21-08 little d™’s “daughtry” sold 6,773
Kelly was clearly on the downswing at this point, although she did enjoy a modest increase in sales during the holiday shopping season back in 2006, and of course, “Breakaway” had already sold more than five and a half million copies. Carrie fares much, much better…her sales increase during the 2007 holiday shopping season was pretty astounding and lasted into the early months of 2008.
Will little d™’s leaky sales boat be lifted by the holiday shopping season tide of 2008? Hard to say, but I’m guessing that his sales will look more like Kelly’s than Carrie’s.

The fangirls are on pins and needles, waiting for David C’s “Time of My Life” to sell platinum, which it probably will do at some point. Plus, it’s a nice distraction from worrying over the quick decline of “Light On” on the sales chart, although his upcoming appearance on Saturday Night Live might light a skyrocket or two…

Jennifer Hudson relative slain, child missing
A relative of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson is believed to be one of two people found slain in a South Side home, according to a police source.
According to public records, the home is owned by Darnell Donnerson, Jennifer Hudson’s mother.
A Chicago police spokeswoman also said a 7-year-old boy was reported missing. Police identified him as Julian King, but they would not say whether he is a relative of the actress. He is 5-foot tall, weighs 135 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.
Police are also looking for a white 1994 Chevrolet Suburban with Illinois license plate No. X584859, from that location. The missing boy may be in the vehicle. According to a source, the actress’ sister reported the boy missing from the home.
Public records indicate the Suburban is registered to Jason Hudson, who neighbors said is Jennifer Hudson’s brother. Authorites would not say whether he was one of the two victims.
Jennifer Hudson is not injured, her bodyguard told the Tribune before referring all questions to a publicist.
One of the victims was a woman in her 50s who was shot in the head and the other was a 29-year-old man who was shot in the chest, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The spokesman did not have the victims’ identities.
At least one of the victims had defensive wounds, accoridng to police.
Chicago Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said at least one victim is “believed to be” a relative of Jennifer Hudson.
The shooting was believed to be related to a domestic disturbance, Bond said, stressing that this was preliminary information.
The source said the bodies of a man and woman were discovered by a family member about 3 p.m. in the home in the 7000 block of South Yale Avenue.

New article on the Jennifer Hudson family murders.
Hudson’s mother, brother found dead
Jennifer Hudson’s publicist has confirmed the identity of the victims
In her self-titled debut album, released in September, Hudson included a message of love to her family, including her mother.
“Next, of course, is u my mommy DARNELL AKA DOLL…,” Hudson wrote in the liner notes of the album after thanking God. “Thank u for instilling in me that I could do anything I put my mind to and teaching me to always put God first. Thank you for loving me no matter what.”
After sending the message of thanks to her mother, Jennifer also including loving words for her siblings and her nephew.
“To the original JHUD’s, my big bro and sis JASON and JULIA, I love you so much. Thank you both for rooting me on and supporting me like nobody else. Also for believing in me and never letting me settle for just ok but the best. Because of u, I don’t believe in limits. LIL’ JULIAN KING my lil’ nephew, I love u, baby.”
In light of the murders, the sentiments in the linear notes from Jennifer’s album are especially poignant.
