American Idol Results Night Recap: The Final Three (warning, not so much a recap as thoughts about American Idol in general)
Alrighty, where to start…
I was never an avid watcher of the American Idol show, I mostly mocked it and rolled my eyes over it when it first came out. Somehow during its fourth season, towards the end, I started to watch and cheer for contestants. BAM! Hooked! I watch it like I watch The Amazing Race, I find characters I like and cheer for them.
I’ve never really watched the final two performance show, because none of my choices ever made it to the final two (well I kind of liked Bo a bit). I did watch season five’s final results night extravaganza. Season 5 was the first season I really watched and did not miss any shows. Lots of fun characters, but by the time Elliott was booted out (he was my choice that year), I was not interested any more. Sorry I never cared much for Kat or Taylor. My lack of interest coincided with noticing that the judges were inconsistent and annoying with their comments. No I didn’t care for Taylor, but sometimes he got some rude comments made to him. Not fun. And there seemed to be subtle favouritism for some contestants, they seemed to get passes for what others were criticized for. But it did not seem so bad.
Season six, no one engaged me and I missed more than I watched (watched enough to know that I did not really like either of the finalists at all).
I’ve watched season 7 from the beginning and got to like some people, so I enjoyed it. But wow! The subtle things that bugged me in season five are even more exaggerated in this year’s show. And if they aren’t taken care of, or at least some of them taken care of, I don’t know if I will watch this show again. The fun I had when I first got hooked is eroding. I don’t think it’s the contestants that are doing it, it’s the structure and format of the show from auditions onwards.
THE AUDITIONS. I hate the joke crap contestant trainwrecks, it’s embarrassing to the show and diminishes the “We are looking for the best singers”. Bull fucking crap. There are decent singers, I want to see them. I don’t have time to watch that foolish tripe anymore and I won’t.
HOLLYWOOD. They should show us more of this. There are a lot of potential good television moments and drama here. And don’t just show us the same four or five people. Let the viewer see as many people as possible. They all have stories, let us decide who is interesting or not. AND PLEASE DO NOT MANUFACTURE FUCKING STORIES FOR PRODUCER FAVOURITES. The viewers should not be treated as being stupid. Why should we respect the show, if its makers do not respect us? It is becoming such a joke.
FINAL 24. I’m not sure if the gender division bugs me or not. Its easier for separating and voting purposes I suppose. I know the shows are long, but cut out as much filler crap as possible so the singers can sing longer than 90 seconds. Maybe have no judges until the final 12, I don’t know. A 90 second song clip chops up a song in an unpleasant way. NO THEME NIGHTS AT THIS POINT PLEASE, THEY SUCK.
FINAL 12/10. If theme nights are deemed necessary, they should have some modern ones for crying out loud. Most of the mentors suck, don’t have them, I do not enjoy those segments at all. Just because some one is famous and a good performer, it does not guarantee that they will be a good teacher. And rampant favouritism sucks. The order of performance should be fair and random, hello! And if a judge cannot be objective, they should be replaced. If the producers really want to choose who wins, why bother with the format of this show? The viewing audience makes the choice, if the producers don’t like it they should have have a jury of “experts” who decide then. Don’t tell people its their choice then do all kinds of stupid things to herd them to the favourite. It’s insulting to the viewer.
VOTING. Power voting whether it is by children, teens, adults is the craziest stupid thing. Votes should be limited to maybe 10 per phone line.
JUDGES. The current crop are terrible and even Simon, who I thought was reasonable has turned into a nasty old hag. Tired and old and useless.
RESULTS SHOW. It would be best if we took 5 minutes to say, “Sorry Mr./Ms. X, your time is up”, but I understand the need for extras (well not really). A half an hour is all that is needed, more is gratuitous and annoying.
These are some of the things that bug me, I’m sure other people are bothered by other things, feel free to add them to the comments.
I am posting this early, because I will not be recapping in detail, I’ll only add an epilogue in the comments after the show has aired.
This was a kimkac rant, because it has been awhile since I’ve done one, and as a wise person once said “It’s good for the soul”, O.K. that was like totally sucking up, but the day of hate is at hand and blah blah blah screw it.

Jason’s off the island, say it ain’t so. I think things are gonna be a little boring now on the show (ya think?).
Have a dandy evening, see you next week. And it will be me, my cat refuses to listen until Syesha is gone. Later.

I agree with pretty much everything you’ve ranted about, kac, with the unlimited voting, theme weeks, and long drawn-out results shows in a three-way tie for first place…
Speaking of which, I really can’t imagine that this year’s Top 3 will split the vote as closely as Idol claimed prior Top 3s have done.
It’s so nice not voting at all, I seriously recommend it.
The only other season I abstained from voting was AI1, and that was probably because I was laughing too hard at their inaugural Top 10.
